Wellbeing Check In’s For Young Cast On Productions
My daughter’s school created these Well-being Check-in Kits, and both Thea and I absolutely love them.
We still use them a couple of times a week as a simple way to check in with how we’re feeling. They create a safe, informal way to talk about emotions with children without it feeling pressured or intimidating.
I think tools like this would be incredibly valuable on productions involving children, especially those running for several weeks or longer.
Why? Because productions often take children out of their normal environments and place them into big, unfamiliar settings filled with new experiences. While exciting, this can also bring lots of different emotions and challenges.
By introducing regular, informal well-being check-ins, children can feel more comfortable expressing how they are feeling in a fun and relaxed way, rather than feeling like they are being questioned. This gives productions an opportunity to better understand and support young cast members throughout the experience.
When children feel supported, they are more likely to enjoy the process, build confidence, and give their best performances — which benefits both the children and the production.
The benefits of regular well-being check-ins for young cast members include :building trust,
:developing emotional awareness
:helping productions spot early signs of distress
:equipping children with healthy coping strategise
