Getting It Right For Every Young Performer
Guidance on the wellbeing of children involved in licence activities.
I am looking to highlight the chaperones checklist which licensing authorities should use to register chaperones. This is very similar to what I had to go through to get my chaperone licence when I lived in England.
Unfortunately in Scotland we don’t have these a real shame and and something that could improve the standard of chaperone and provide the highest standard of care/safeguarding for our young actors. But at the moment the Scottish Government and local authorities don’t see a need to improve the system.
But this is what as a production I advise you should be looking for in your chaperones. The role of a chaperone can be very complex. As a production you are responsible for the children you employ you need to safeguard them and look after their physical and mental wellbeing. As part of that you need to engage with a professional experienced chaperone.
Spending some time extra time on researching a quality chaperone that fits your young cast needs and your productions needs is extremely beneficial for everyone involved. You want to be in control on who you get on your team for this important role.
Passing it on to somebody else may mean you get someone that doesn’t fit your young cast needs or your production needs.
Further to this I would say the desirable criteria is now becoming essential as the role is developing and the needs of children are always changing in the fast paced world we live in.
This list is very much a skill list I would expect people with a background in working in education to have a vast knowledge of people that have had several years of training to get them ready to work with children.
There is not so much training on this available to chaperones or productions.
