The Priceless Moments
When working with children we talk about qualifications and training that will help us understand the child’s needs and how we can safeguard. Training is great and is vital in understanding how we work/engage/support/safeguard young actors.
I can’t recommend taking part in as much as possible to learn and develop your skills. When working in education I would constantly be taking part in training and found it vital for being a better educator and learning how to support children to the highest standard.
But training is one part of your development and learning there is also another vital skill we need to develop .
The other part of training is the training I do every time I am with children that could be on set, in an education setting, sports club or as a parent.
I feel the more time we spend around children and young adults the more we learn how we can support and more about their needs.
I have been very lucky to spend almost 15 years being involved in some sort of work with under 18’s and over time in being in their company you learn how to interact at their level.
You learn how to actively listen and engage with them it becomes less like skill and more like a natural quality.
Once you learn this you find the trust and bond with the children you safeguard becomes stronger.
You can have a professional relationship but still have enjoyment with the children you support. You can laugh together share new experiences with them, stand up and advocate for them.
That’s what makes the time you spend with them on set priceless not lots of people get that opportunity and the more time you can spend with young people the more you learn and can support.
I am always learning and reflecting on each working environment I am in. What went well what was different, did we have new needs to meet and how can we improve the next time we work together.
Working with children is fast paced the world is now fast paced and changing. This means spending time with children is vital to understand how their needs are changing.
By being in a setting with children like a tv set or base location.
You also gain an understanding of how these settings work how they support each of their young actors you learn good working practices and see it happening you are also part of it.
So when working with children or supporting productions that have young cast it’s vitally important that you still interact with young actors so your advice, skills and support is update and effective in a work place environment. Children and productions are always changing and evolving this fast paced world we live in now.
But as previously stated when working with children it’s important to have fun. A set is a fantastic learning experience for children one that not many get and being part of this a privilege . #learningeveryday #learningisfun #support #engagement #activelearners #workingwithchildren
