Being Proactive over Reactive when working with children

Why being Proactive and not Reactive when preparing your production for involving young cast is vital.

The more you can do in prep to provide a secure working environment that meets the needs of your young cast will give you the best opportunity to get strong performances from them.

The more you can do in prep to provide a secure working environment that meets the needs of your young cast will give you the best opportunity to get strong performances from them.

By talking to young cast, parents and specialists that work with young adults you gain a strong understanding of how they work and what they will need for a long shoot. The sooner you get the right people in to support you with your production the sooner you can start on this and get you fully prepared for a successful start to filming.

Doing this now will also save you time on set as we know once you start filming time flies by. I find it also saves a production money as less problems arise during a production and everything can be budgeted before and it doesn’t come as a surprise or a last minute scramble

All sorts can be arranged early from travel, accommodation, chaperoning, tutoring, Green rooms, introductions, best practices when working with children and more but these early stages are essential for building relationships with young cast once this happens you understand their needs and can understand how to support them on set so you hit the ground running.

Our aim should be to let the child have one focus give the best performance they can let them thrive on your production. To do this it’s always best to proactive put the work in before so there is a structure to their day and they feel at ease and comfortable around people and don’t have to worry. Do this you are safeguarding them and going to get a great performance.
